My Largest Watercolor
| I have recently completed and delivered a commission
for the largest watercolor painting I've ever done. In fact, it's
the largest watercolor painting I've ever seen. The image
size is 54 inches by 42 inches
In order to paint this painting using my usual wet in wet
technique, I had to get some special equipment. |

Red Maples in Autumn
Watercolor. Image size
54" x 42"
|
| I usually work on 300 lb paper,
completely saturating the paper with water back and front while it
lies on a sheet of plexiglass. My normal work area was not
large enough to accommodate this painting's size, so I had to buy
a 4 foot by 6 foot sheet of plexiglass to work on. The paper
came in a 44 inch wide roll and I was worried that it would not
flatten out. I let it lay, curl side down on the plexiglass,
weighted with books for several days before painting, hoping the
curl would come out of it. Once I wet it down, it lay flat
for me.
For brushes, I bought a 4 inch and a 2 inch house painting
brush from the hardware store. I had my doubts about how
watercolor would flow from these brushes, but even though I
selected the more expensive "one coat" variety, they
still cost much less than my usual brushes. After carefully
cleaning them, I gave them a try on a smaller sheet of
paper. I found I was satisfied at how the paint flowed.

| I had planned out the large painting by doing
several regular-sized paintings of similar composition (click
here to see). Once I got started on the large painting,
I was thoroughly engrossed in the painting process, and the size
did not inhibit me. I think it turned out well. |

If anyone has painted or has seen a watercolor painting this large or
even larger, I'd love to hear about it, please drop
me a line.
Happy Painting,
Kristine.
